I& #39;m not in the habit of criticising journalists, but this is embarrassing. Nominally left-wing publication @DailyMirror uncritically running @Deliveroo propaganda & thus helping the company slash rider wages. All of Shu& #39;s assertions are presented as fact, with no opposing opinion
For example this. Did the journalist bother checking with any riders (or, god forbid, a union!) if it was true that there is more work for riders? He could have at least read this article from CNBC which presents a wildly different situation. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/23/uber-eats-and-deliveroo-riders-in-uk-struggling-as-takeout-orders-fall.html">https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/2...
Or how about this assertion that riders earn "well above the minimum wage"? Presented as fact under the picture of a smiling @Deliveroo rider? Did he bother asking @SYorksCouriers @CouriersNotts @CouriersNetwork
@Couriers_Scot @CouriersYork if this was true? Spoiler: it ain& #39;t!
Or the classic "flexibility" canard. Did he ask any riders how flexibility works in reality? If he had they& #39;d have told him that to earn anything at all, you are effectively forced to work at peak times. He would have also heard of how the company relies on it& #39;s full-time riders
This is why journalists simply copying these kinds of press releases from Deliveroo harms riders. https://twitter.com/Mellino/status/1310652110816661504">https://twitter.com/Mellino/s...
So if you are a journalist that covers these sorts of issues, please, I beg you, act responsibly. Do your actual job and try to find the truth, don& #39;t just simply copy and paste a press release.
