The rebellion that exploded after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd which sparked an uprising in Minneapolis + spread to cities across the US, has brought literally tens of millions of people into the streets. Yet to hear the media tell it - support for the movement is waning. A thread.
In early July, the New York Times published a report on a study by Civis Analytics, a data science firm, who found that between 15 million to 26 million people in the United States participated in demonstrations over the death of George Floyd since late May.
Over three months have passed since this initial study was conducted and since then, demonstrations have only grown and continued: in Portland, in Kenosha, in Louisville, and beyond.
In short, the continuing rebellion against systematic police killing and white supremacy is one of the largest explosions of working-class grassroots action in the history of the country - dramatically larger than the pro-Trump, far-Right 'Re-Open' rallies.
However, when one looks at the numbers for this study, w find in fact that this drop in support comes squarely from Republican voters, while support for the protests among non-Trump supporters and young people, remains high and statically largely the same.
When polled, non-Trump voters report a 70% support rate of the protests, now, just as they did in June of 2020. However, among Trump supporters, this support has fallen from 40% support in June, to a disapproval rating now at 75%.
This means; outside of the Trump/Fox News media bubble, support for the rebellion remains the same.
A recent poll from Gen Forward on Zoomers and younger millennial found the same thing. With 20% of African-American youth stating that "revolution" was needed and support for the current protests at 75%.
White youth polled 10% in favor of revolution as a strategy and about 70% in support of the rebellion. Latinx and Asian American youth where somewhere in between the two - showing across the board, mass support for the current rebellion among the youth. https://genforwardsurvey.com/download/?did=332
