Breathing is the most overlooked aspect of our health.

We seldom think about it and the information available is lacking, to say the least.

Here are the most pervasive beliefs about breathing.

(THREAD)
1. "CO2 is waste gas"

CO2 is a product of cellular respiration. It's responsible for the transfer of oxygen from the blood to the tissues and plays a role in almost every metabolic process.

"Carbon dioxide is the chief hormone of the entire body"
(Yandell Henderson, Ph.D.)
2. "Deep breathing is good for you"

Overbreathing (hyperventilation) that results from deep breathing will expel an excessive amount of CO2, resulting in mild to severe hypocapnia.

Deep breathing, in the literal sense, means diaphragmatic breathing.
3. "What hole you breathe in doesn't matter"

Nosebreathing will filter and warm the air you breathe in. The dead space in the sinuses will produce nitric oxide, preserve more CO2, and naturally slow down your breathing.

Don't be a mouthbreather.
