/10 BREAKING: Significant news from #India today as Amnesty International announces it has been forced to halt operations in the country due to what it describes as "government intimidation" & an "incessant witch hunt" against human rights groups. @yogital @AIIndia
/10 The harassment, they say, is the result of "unequivocal calls for transparency in the government, more recently for accountability of the Delhi police and the Government of India regarding the grave human rights violations in Delhi riots and Jammu & Kashmir."
/10 The bank accounts of the organisation have been frozen by the Indian Government forcing them to stop all work, let staff go & pause all ongoing campaign and research work. They say the government is portraying their lawful fundraising as money-laundering.
/10 @Avinash_1_Kumar, Executive Director of Amnesty International India, says this latest move is "akin to freezing dissent." They accuse the govt of repressive policies and a sustained assault on those who speak truth to power.
/10 Their findings closely mirror the BBCs own reporting from the time on the alleged actions of the police during the Delhi riots in February this year. @yogital

/10 Amnesty International has told the BBC that the only other country where they've been forced to suspend operations is Russia. Given that India is the world's most populous democracy that's significant &, some would say, very worrying.
/10 Amnesty says that they share the values enshrined in the Constitution of India which "flow from a long and rich Indian tradition of pluralism, tolerance and peaceful dissent." Many now are calling into question the health of the country's democracy.
/10 The BBC has requested a response from the Indian government to the allegations. More coverage on this important issue across the BBC today. Follow our India Correspondent @Yogital for more.
