A 19-year-old Dalit teen from UP's Hathras died today morning at AIIMS Delhi. 2 weeks ago, she was brutally gangraped by 4 Thakur men, who cut off her tongue so she couldn't scream for help. Paralysed, the victim was not shifted to AIIMS till this week. (1/n)
Meanwhile, the kin of the accused continued to threaten her family. So far, the four men have been arrested and only 1 cop has been shunted to police lines for dereliction of duty. We have yet to hear a word of condemnation or promise of swift justice from the govt
The same govt that doesn't hesitate to reach out to women like Kangana Ranaut and Payal Ghosh when they are aggrieved.
I remember being in 12th standard when the Nirbhaya case happened. For many of us in Delhi it was a watershed moment. Something that imprints on you for life. Never had I felt so scared, so powerless yet so determined for things to change. I remember the protests.
Young women and men demanding a better life for our daughters at India Gate. Them being lathicharged and struck by water cannons because they tried to leap over a barricade, hoping they could reach the President house, make their voices heard.
I hadn't fully developed an understanding of why protests are important till then. Thanks to a particularly bad teacher, we all believed the police were the victims in that protest. However, some time gave the realisation that it wasn't just a protest
It was collective outpouring of grief, of anger, of frustration. Then the next major incident became the Kathua gangrape. The brutality of the crime and the defense of it would make any decent person sick to the stomach.
I don't know if there's any point to this thread. All I know is the Hathras teen deserves our anger and our grief just as much. Perhaps more because this was a crime perpetrated by those who enjoy impunity due to their caste.
And may there come a day when we stop having to map the history of women across the world through dehumanising crimes committed against them
