okay this, i’m gonna have to input an unpopular opinion here probably but while i do see that sm is definitely pushing superm and nct, their senior groups couldn’t really be as active as them you know? let’s have a look at the situation for each of the groups mentioned (cont.) https://twitter.com/hyunslips/status/1310737935235514373">https://twitter.com/hyunslips...
for red velvet, we all know about wendy’s unfortunate accident which made her be in a hiatus for months. hence psycho promotions, much more a group comeback were impossible. what we did get was the aseul subunit which honestly had good promos and sales.
for shinee, 3 people are serving in the military so only taemin is active in the industry, both as a soloist and a superm member. they simply can’t promote as a group given their situation.
for snsd-oh!gg, please take note that while they could actually promote as a group, all members are focusing on their solo careers at the moment. taeyeon and hyoyeon in music, yuri and yoona in acting, and sunny in variety.
for exo, 2 people are in the military, kai is active in superm, chen has matters to take care of but still sang an ost recently! baekhyun is a soloist and also active in superm, and exo-sc did have a 2020 comeback.
so what i’m trying to say here is that i think sm is rightfully pushing their cash cows (not even gonna sugarcoat) which are nct and superm, because in the business perspective, promoting them, hence making their fanbase grow, will be good in the long run.
a high return of investment considering these groups’ success (if they ever become extremely successful) is favorable and ofc will partly serve to yield new sm groups in the future.
sm is capable of producing banger music like yg or trendy, electronic music like jyp but they are definitely being experimental, which has always been the case ever since. however they do that at the cost of having less impactful music in the kpop industry as compared to others.
i respect their craft and artistry but honestly they need to improve their shit and adapt to the current generation if they want to keep up. sm is one of the largest ent companies, if not the largest, and the only reason why they’re still one of the leading companies is the
immense success of the groups they have created thus far. although it is the first time that their representative girl group (rv) and boy group (nct) aren’t leading the kpop industry in their generation, so there is that unmistakable decline.
don’t really want to end this thread in a bad light so pls support red velvet because i heard they’re coming back soon! and also support nct 2020, sm seems to have prepared a lot— the teasers alone are insane. anyway, if you’ve reached this thx for coming to my ted talk i gtg.
