#AfricanLivesMatter A young attorney asked me to mentor him. I sent him 10 books on politics, economics , business leadership & history and asked him to read before our first tele-conversation in the next three weeks . He was offended. Years later he asked why ?
#AfricanLivesMatter Here are the three reasons why :
1. Avoid founding any relationship with any leadership in an ideological &ethical vacuum.
2. Know what you share in common with your mentor beyond clichés & superficial impressions
3. To go beyond your mentor, read beyond him
#AfricanLivesMatter To be mentored is not an opportunity to show off your brilliance or to be affirmed by someone else. You don't know what you don't know until you observe those that know doing what they know to do . They will be time to shine but observe strengths&weaknesses
#AfricanLivesMatter In most of our countries we have leaders that:-
1. Grew like weeds . No prior experience of working any organisation or working with systems
2. No training or equipping in the art & skill of leading human beings
3. No applied knowledge of systems thinking
#AfricanLivesMatter It is alright to think outside the box , but you must know what the boxes are so that you avoid in your supposed "disruptive thinking" creating boxes made of Iron and steel ! Self-educate , get a coach or mentor . Put in place a system of personal growth
#AfricanLivesMatter I have been around long enough to know brilliant Professors, professionals, artists, preachers, business folks, activists that have not grown. They do the same things, use the same examples, make the same arguments. It's not consistency It's stagnation going to death
