You know #FundraisingTwitter?
I took a nap today, I have time.
We're going to have a chat about our elitist, anti-beneficiary BULLSHIT.

Problem One:
Were generally a bunch of white upper middle class women who have NO concept of true social justice. We think we are going to save the world.
Were generally a bunch of white upper middle class women who have NO concept of true social justice. We think we are going to save the world.
But that's not how this works.
Fundraising doesn't save people.
Social change saves people. Saves ALL of us.
But we're not interested in bringing beneficiaries up with us.
We always want to be on a higher step.

It's the same way white women only want to have the same ability to oppress as white men (which we prettttty much have).
Fundraisers, we want to make it seem like we're helping people, as long as we're still better than them.

Fundraisers don't want to give up their power, privilege, or positions.
We have ableds running orgs for Disabled folks.
We have rich people running orgs for people in poverty.
What the hell does that do?

Nothing, really.
Give Disabled folks the top jobs in taking care of our own.
Black women need to be heading orgs for their communities.
Queers holding the top roles in orgs for ours.
We can't have the oppressors in charge of our liberation.

Second problem:
We talk like our beneficiaries CANT HEAR US.
The way we write about beneficiaries isn't about being "politically correct."
It is about respecting the inherent dignity of EVERY PERSON.

Don't talk about how we can't educate our donors when it comes to language.
We can. We choose not to.
We live by "money above all else"
Which isn't justice.

Justice is DIGNITY above all else. LOVE above all else.
FAIRNESS above all else.
And yeah. Money helps. Because we live in a capitalist society.
But it's not the solution. It's a tool.

So no.
I'm not okay with the concept of the ends justifying the means.
I will write about beneficiaries the way they want to be written about. I will prioritize their ownership of their own stories.
And I will pull them up, and raise them ABOVE me.

Go ahead. Unfollow me.
Do fundraising the way the collection of rich old white men tells you to.
But I'm here to tell you out there is a better way. And I am not leaving.
