Devotion of parents is a central theme is most of our scriptures. Inspired by a current real-life incident, I thought of narrating a very interesting story from Padma Purana.

This is about devotion to Parents.

Pippala - Sukarmā

1/n
Pippala, born to Kashyapa, desired to attain powers unrivaled by anyone else in the universe.

He goes to dasharanya forest & starts a severe penance. It was so severe that gods and sages were marvelled to see this amazing experience.

2/n
Termites built an ant hill, while poisonous snakes curled around him and bit him. Yet nothing happened to Pippala. 1000 years passed in this fashion.

His body became radiant and a circles of energy engulfed his body like a halo.

3000 years passed and gods were pleased

3/n
Gods asked Pippala, "You have pleased us with your tapasya. Ask whatever boon you wish for".

Pipalla says: "I desire that all objects in this universe may obey my will"

Gods granted this boon.

Pippala was delighted and ecstatic about what he had achieved.

4/n
He sat down near a pond and started to congratulate himself on his achievement. Surely, there was no one in this universe who could parallel himm.

A crane was standing near the pond, understood Pippala's thoughts and said : "Why are you so delighted ...

5/n
You haven't achieved anything at all. You have wasted 3000 years on tapasya.

Sukarmā is more learned than you and he didn't do any tapasya"

Pippala was taken aback and enquired the Crane who it was.

Crane retorts : "Why dont you go and ask Sukarmā who I am"

6/n
Sukarmā:

Sukarmā was the son of a brahmana called Kundala. He was very devoted to his aged parents.

When Pippala visits him, he is welcomed with offerings. Sukarmā goes on to tell that the Crane told that you wasted 3000 years in meditation and you are ignorant and all..

7/n
Suprised, Pippala asks who is that Crane. Sukarmā replies that it was the brahman (divine essence).

Pippala : "Can you control all objects in universe?"

Sukarmā : "Judge for yourself"

Sukarmā summons Indra and other gods, who promptly appear in front of Pippala & Sukarmā

8/n
The gods ask "Why did you summon us?"

Sukarmā explains the situation that he did so to demonstrate his powers.

Sukarmā further elaborates to Pippala that his powers were due to his devotion to parents. There was no tapasya or visitng tirthakshethras.

9/n
Punya achieved from Yajnas can be exceeded by serving one's parents faithfully. What's the point of studying of Vedas, if one is not going to serve one's parents?

Sukarmā goes on to describe the story of Yayati and Puru and the story of Yayati desiring his youth

10/n
The crux of this thread is to demonstrate the powers of devotion to parents and how that is the highest ideal.

End of Pippala - Sukarmā

Dedicated to one of my friends who is a living example of this.
