why “the king of the court” attitude isn’t entirely kageyama’s fault: a thread
first, i don’t think oikawa is to blame/included with the kitagawa first team and i’ll explain that here. oikawa did attempt to hit kageyama and was rude to him, but he later apologized and it’s clear that these events didn’t cause anything with kageyama (since he didn’t care)
therefore, when i use ‘kitagawa first’ i’m referring to the team during kageyama’s third year of middle school
kitagawa first’s team gave kageyama the nickname “the king of the court” and painted him out to be a self centered, egocentric, rude asshole who doesn’t care about anyone else and only does what’s right for him. in the process, they called themselves his “majesty’s servants” —
this sort of indicates and says that the kitagawa first team never did anything wrong, and kageyama was just an asshole to them and bossed them around (which isn’t true)
the kitagawa first team never did anything to help kageyama or asked if he was okay, they just retaliated by giving him a nickname and painting him out to be a bad person. even the coach just benched him and never asked if he was okay or if something was bugging him.
by giving him the nickname and calling themselves “his majesty’s servants”, the kitagawa first team painted themselves as them doing nothing wrong and pushed the agenda that kageyama was just mean to them and they never contributed to kageyama’s attitude.
kitagawa first usually only called him by “the king” and it possibly caused him to resent the team more / get more aggressive and so he (possibly subconsciously?) fit more into the role of a king since they pushed that onto him, he believed he was egocentric and self-centred.
unlike kitagawa first, karasuno only uses the nickname “the king”
to poke fun at or mess with kageyama, which he understands and is okay with. karasuno calls him by his name and not by the nickname given to him to tear him down, which allowed him to actually get along with them
by not trying to help kageyama and only tearing him down more, kageyama (possibly) just became more of a king/tyrant because thats how people saw him, so he assumed that’s how he should be acting.

later, it’s assumed that kageyama’s grandfather passed away sometime before the finals match we saw where kitagawa first resents him. it’s possible that the stress of loosing a family member and not wanting to disappoint his team caused his outburst.
you can also note that since his team resented him, he was fairly lonely during middle school and even didn’t know what a high five was. this probably contributed to his king-like attitude. while in high school, his team never resented him and even poked fun at his attitude and—
—never put him for his playing style (the quick attacks).
