Good evening. Let's talk a little bit about Shelley Moore Capito. You want swamp? Let's talk the *swampiest* of swamps in West Virginia.
Capito has been an elected official for the state of West Virginia since 1996. She's the daughter of former West Virginia governor Arch Moore, ***who was prosecuted and convicted of mail fraud, tax fraud, extortion, and obstruction of justice*** after he left office.
He also oversaw the recovery from the Buffalo Creek Disaster, in which the Pittston Coal Company paid only $1 million dollars under Moore's approval, which did not come even *close* to the $9.5M cleanup costs.
For those who don't know, the Buffalo Creek disaster is a mining-related disaster that killed 125 people, injured 1121, and left 4,000 people homeless. The disaster mainly affected unincorporated communities and census-designated places in South WV.
The legal fees from the case were donated by the lawyers for the construction of a community center, which was promised in 1972.

It was never built.

Moore was elected governor again in 1985 and went to prison in 1991. He was also disbarred.
Back to his public servant daughter, Shelley.

I use the word "servant" loosely.
Taking advantage of her father's corruption, Capito went to nice, private schools throughout her educational career. She went to a *very* prestigious private prep school, Holton-Arms, just outside of Washington, D.C.

The tuition today is $42,900+.
She continued her education at the private Duke University in Durham, NC. In fairness, she did continue to get her master's degree from the University of Virginia.
Now there's nothing wrong with getting an education. It's a *very* good thing. Going to expensive, prestigious private schools on your dad's dime as he's acting as one of the most corrupt public officials in state history?

A completely different issue.
But let's just focus on her record. Let's focus on her votes.

As a member of the House (WV-02), Capito voted to terminate the Home Affordable Mortgage Program in 2011. On the tail end of the 2008 mortgage crisis, she voted to turn an eye to West Virginians losing their homes.
She's taken *hundreds of thousands* of dollars from big energy companies, which probably explains why she's voted yes to OCS oil drilling, barring the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases, oil and gas exploration subsidies, and new oil refineries.
It also explains why she'd vote no on CO2 limits, homegrown biofuels, tax incentives for renewables, restricting oil drilling in ANWR, and even American energy independence.

So much for "America first." More like "my Senate seat first."

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
But let's keep digging. Let's move deeper into the age of Trump.

She voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Based on a 2018 WVU study, 40% of West Virginians would be either uncoverable or have more expensive care without it.

40% of the population, and that's not including elderly West Virginians. The study linked above notes that West Virginians have some of the nation's highest rates of pre-existing conditions.

The firm number is 718,942 West Virginians, almost the population of North Dakota.
If you're directly working against the very lives of 40% of your constituents, are you really representing them? Or are you representing the big donors you take millions from?
Of the top 10 contributors to Shelley Moore Capito, none of them are based in West Virginia. How much money is coming into Arch Moore's daughter's coffers so that she can keep money out of the pockets of West Virginians?
West Virginia is a beautiful state, with so much untapped potential, yet it holds a 17.8% poverty rate. That's only better than Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. She continues to back the same coal industry that her father did as more and more West Virginians go broke.
How is West Virginia supposed to grow, how are things supposed to improve, if West Virginian elected officials continue to try the same, tired strategies?
Shelley Moore Capito isn't her father. But she benefitted from his corruption and sent that money out of the state. She used his experience and name to get office, and keeps putting money out of the state.

To top it all off, she backs the most corrupt President in US history.
Shelley Moore Capito may not be explicitly corrupt, but she benefitted from it, excuses it, works with it, and is a rubber stamp for it.

West Virginia needs to do better than Arch Moore's daughter.

They deserve better than Shelley Moore Capito.
