In an effort to adjust my work-life balance, I& #39;ve deliberately reduced my work week to ~40 hours per week.
Here& #39;s a break-down of what I& #39;ve done over the past 4 weeks.

1) I have very few hobbies because I work so much. What to do w/all this free time!?
2) I barely do any research myself.
3) Virtual teaching costs me way more time than it should as an R1 prof. It& #39;s worth it in many respects but I wish the extra time investment was acknowledged

4) I was becoming a miserable workaholic & don& #39;t want to be anymore.
5) I& #39;ve realized that the academy (in general) does not always value the aspects of my job that I think are important.
6) I& #39;ve become more efficient at tackling my to-do list.

7) I feel less guilty when I don& #39;t work weekends or evenings even though my to-do list is extremely backed up. It& #39;ll get it done when I can.

8) I spend way too much time on e-mail. I started picking blocks of time per day when I check/send e-mails.

9) I need to appreciate myself more.
10) I& #39;ve learned to say "no" more and tell myself that if I say "yes" to something extra, it& #39;ll be at the sacrifice of my non-work time.
11) I think (hope) I& #39;m becoming a better mentor and role model to my students by realizing the above.

I& #39;m not suggesting that you should only work 40 hours per week if you don& #39;t want to. Do what makes you feel happy and productive.
All I know is that I was giving all of my time to work and not feeling the reward, or joy of why I love this job, anymore.

I& #39;m putting this out there in camaraderie because I& #39;ve been talking to SOOOOOOO many #NewPI faculty who are feeling the same burnout that inspired this tweet.
I also think that we don& #39;t have this transparent discussion enough with our grad students/postdocs.

Do I think that I can do my job (now) at ~40 hours per week and be successful? I think so.
But if I can& #39;t be an academic at ~40 hours per week, so be it, I have other skills!
