All of Destiny's characters have always been good, the fanbase is just full of illiterates who only hear what they want to hear and consider their opinions (no matter how prejudiced) to be the characters' canon depictions.

And I'm not just talking about Zavala (though he's definitely the biggest example); I'm talking about people spending years screaming "CAYDE IS THE ONLY GOOD CHARACTER" when they only liked him for his jokes...
...How they reduce Mara Sov to "the h*lmet st*yed on" because they love to imagine powerful women being dominated by men, how they brush aside the trauma and loss of Ana Bray (a war hero) to focus on her "thicc thighs"...
...How they completely reduce patrol NPCs like Asher to "grumpy old bitch", or Sloane that "ugly old woman", or Failsafe that "funny robot" or Devrim...honestly I never even hear about Devrim.
And Eris. Poor fucking Eris. A deeply traumatized character even more deeply cared for by the writers, who's spent everything she has fighting against the Darkness because she cannot stand the thought of someone - even a single person - going through what she went through.
....Reduced to "She's secretly evil" theories by fans who can't look at a traumatized people and see a fucking human being.
There's also the issue with players not realizing that the Light and Darkness are PEOPLE who CHOSE to become what they are now but that's a whole other, longer subject.
All these amazing characters with loads of depth, reduced to the most basic of stereotypes bc fans can't handle anything deeper than a rain puddle while also demanding that Bungie "write better", then their writing is already apparently too complex for their pea-sized brains.
(And, yes, I know this is a issue for most media, but Destiny takes that issue a hundred miles further because I genuinely cannot think of a SINGLE character who's seen by the fanbase for what they really are and not what stereotype they've been reduced to.)
