MY CRYPTO STORY

Last year, on this date, I flew out to San Francisco to interview with @coinbase. It was my first time in California.

This is my story about permissionless technology and social mobility.
Some background, I'm from a middle class family in Malaysia. We're not poor but there is a sense that we're trapped here, forever.

I wanted to break free of that reality. Money was the only way out.
In 2017, I found ICOs as a "get rich quick scheme". Didn't work out obviously.

By then, I had several mobile apps under my name, but none of them made me any money.

I knew I had to get into crypto next.
I cold emailed every single VC and blockchain company out there for a job. And I meant EVERY.

The Panteras, Paradigms of the world. You name it, I got rejected by it.

I would apply to do literally ANYTHING. Engineer, analyst, executive assistant, anything. I just wanted in.
Come 2019, I cold emailed @jiayaoqi and @maqstik. They took a chance on me and gave me an internship in @zilliqa.

For me, this was a great escape.

This was my first time in a foreign country. The pay was great. I learned a great deal about smart contracts in Zil.
But here, my story hits an inflection point, @juliankoh intro-ed me to his teammates from Coinbase in Consensus Singapore.

This was the first time I felt included as an outsider. We went to the food market to eat satays, drank beer and talked about crypto.
After talking to the hiring manager, they agreed to fly me over to SF to interview, at no cost to me.

This is how much @Coinbase cares about talent and hiring.
The night before the interview, I kept playing Hamilton's "My Shot", because it was literally my only shot for a better life.

I did not have much of a choice other than to succeed.
If there's a lesson that I would leave here, it's that this technology that we're working on has social implications.

A kid that is 14 years old can start accessing financial infrastructure and make money.

That is a powerful idea, and is why I'm proud to work for @coinbase.
I'm posting this because of the news around Coinbase.

@brian_armstrong believes that energy applied in the correct direction creates most amount of change.

I believe that as well. They brought a small town kid from Kuala Lumpur and paid him 15x what he would've been getting.
