i'm not tagging any so feel free anyone! 7 artists~
Teresa Teng (鄧麗君) the most famous Taiwanese singer, probably the most famous singer of East Asia for a while. Iconic, amazing, adore her.
Zhou Shen (周深): the only contemporary cpop singer i really follow, gorgeous voice. I https://twitter.com/3ysz_/status/1310691704933056512
especially recommend 大魚, his covers of 身騎白馬, 雪落下的聲音 and 年輪 and his duets with Hacken Lee especially 那片海, 追, 月半小夜曲 and 天下有情人. He's also super hilarious in variety shows, love him!
Watkin/Emil Chau (周华健): I grew up on his music really. His voice is
very memorable but he's more known for his songwriting, has many iconic songs like 花心,朋友,愛情隨,明天我要嫁給你。
Fei Yu-ching (費玉清)!: my favorite and probably a favorite of many in the older generation, his last concert in socal all us diaspora kids had relatives going
He's that popular. He was actually famous worldwide from Tiktok after he retired? I love him, Taiwanese icon, known for the revival of traditional Chinese pop songs, beautiful voice. Some highlights are 一剪梅,千里之外 (with Jay Chou!), 晚安曲 ,你是我永遠的鄉愁 and his duets
with Ayunga (阿云嘎) especially 囚鳥,新鴛鴦蝴蝶夢 and 卷珠帘 and there's a song he sings with Zhou Shen (who sings Japanese) and Hacken Lee (in Cantonese) 另一種鄉愁 that is so beautiful. Fei Yu-ching has a super distinctive beautiful voice that's so recognizable and he's also
famous for telling dirty jokes and imitating other singers on Taiwanese variety shows (alas he was forbidden from doing so in China) Honestly my parents also grew up listening to him.

Beyond (the HK Cantopop rock band): I don't speak Cantonese but my dad always played their
cassettes and I adored them, like I'm sure I was awful but I sung along to them so much my dad still jokes about it. 光輝歲月,Amani, 海闊天空。Their lead singer Wong Ka Kui (黃家駒) tragically passed away at their height of popularity due to a stage fall. I don't really listen
to much rock at all beyond some of the classics but Beyond is just so good.
Now for a pivot to hiphop:
Kendrick Lamar! He's already cemented his reputation as one of the greatest of all time and genuinely he's someone who has both lyricism and flow in spades. Every album of his
is critically acclaimed and for good reason. You can listen to him when you wanna chill, when you wanna party, when you want to really dig deep and actually consider his message. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Damn but he really should have won it for To Pimp a Butterfly. I really
could go on and on forever and there's no shortage of articles really going in depth on his music. He's such an artist and I recommend him to everyone. His songs can be explicit so just keep that in mind. Some of my favorites are Loyalty, Love, All of the Stars, Poetic Justice, i
(yes the song name is "i"), Alright, Swimming Pools, Money Trees, the Recipe, Duckworth, How Much a Dollar Cost (Obama said it was his favorite song of the year), Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe, Control, Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst and DNA. Even if you don't like hiphop, I think
he's surpassed it and his lyrics are well worth reading and engaging with. I respect and admire him so much and he's also from SoCal and I grew up on West Coast hiphop.

Common: I think he's focused on acting more now but I really love his albums Be and Like Water for Chocolate.
I think he's really underrated. I would recommend Be, Faithful, The Food, I Used to Love H.E.R,Come Close, Act Too, Go, Love of My Life, The People, The Sixth Sense, The Corner, The Light.

Anyways I might have forgotten some but this is my 7 that I would recommend, all amazing.
