I havent seen any threads goin around with information on the Propositions we'll be voting on in California so I decided to make a thread about them myself! I did my best trying to type this up and I can try to answer any questions y'all have if you respond to this tweet :) 1/18
Prop 14:Authorizes some bonds that will help continue the research of STEM cells. STEM cell research has the benefit of creating many high-paying jobs for the bioresearch field as well as possible therapy for conditions such as heart disease diabetes and Alzheimer's. 2/18
Prop 15: Increases funding for public schools, community college, and local governments by taxing commercial and industrial property based on their current market worth instead of the price they bought their property at. This will NOT affect residential people. 3/18
Prop 16: This would allow for diversity to be reconsidered as a factor for things such as government employment, public education, and contracting decisions. This one is sort of difficuly because there's no way to tell how it will be used... 4/18
... For example, one interpretation of the proposition is to allow for a more even playing field for students getting accepted into colleges or new employees going into the workforce. However another way to view it would be through the lens of recent events of... 5/18
... systemic racial injustice that causes many people to have difficulty finding jobs and careers. 6/18
Prop 17:This proposition would allow people who have finished prison sentences to regain their right to vote. While there is a lot we could talk about here, I feel that every citizen has a right to vote and this Prop will give formerly incarcerated citizens that opportunity 7/18
Prop 18:This would allow 17-year-olds to vote who are going to turn 18 by the next general election to vote. While this will only really matter for the Primaries the year before general elections and special elections, I believe it could incentivize voting for younger ages. 8/18
Prop 19: From what I can gather this will allow changes in property tax rules for homeowners that will allow the ability to transfer the tax rate from a primary residence when moving to a replacement residence. This will apply to homeowners over 55... 9/18
... people who are part of a natural disaster, or disabled. It will also change the taxation of family-property transfers and set up fire protection service funds. 10/18
Prop 20:Would add a few crimes to the list of violent felonies for which parole cant be granted. This is seen by many as a step backward for California as this would also be taking away funding for programs that offer rehabilitation and trauma recovery centers for victims. 11/18
Prop 21: Gives local government more authority over rent control on houses that were initially occupied over 15 years ago. This will allow for lower rent in many areas. Unless you are a landlord I see no reason to not be voting YES on this one. 12/18
Prop 22: Voting on whether workers for App-based transportation and delivery such as Uber and DoorDash should be considered independent contractors or employees of whomever they work for... 13/18
... Basically, these app companies are trying to get out of paying the people they employ for things such as benefits, insurance, and extra wages. 14/18
Prop 23: This proposition would establish rules and requirements for dialysis clinics such as having an on-site physician, mandated reporting of dialysis-related infections, and not being able to close without informing the health department. 15/18
Prop 24: Gives consumers more say on what information they will be giving/granting to businesses by creating a state agency that will enforce laws regarding privacy as well as other consumer privacy-related issues. 16/18
Prop 25: This proposition would replace the bail system for people who are arrested with a ruling for judges to make on whether the person should be kept in jail until their hearing. If denied the current system will be kept in place. 17/18
If you made it this far congrats and again I will try to answer any questions you have! If there are any errors or I am incorrect please let me know :) Also if you plan on voting by mail I would advise delivering your mail ballot to a polling place to ensure it's received! 18/18
