I've been struggling lately with feeling motivated, focusing on the good, and staying productive. Today, my school hosted a "Self-Care for Scholars" workshop that really could not have come at a better time. These are some notes I took. I'm sharing to help me hold onto them.
[1] Growth is slow and steady. Take thoughtful steps towards small goals. Eventually, they add up! My favorite quote from today's workshop: "under-promise, and over-perform."
[2] Focus on achievements. Keep a list of things you did today, not just things a list of the things you still need to do. Another great line from the workshop: "savor your successes."
[3] Don't compare yourself to people with more experience than you. Those people have years of extra practice. Focus on the growth you are making *now.*
[4] When you're in a difficult headspace, take a step back. Observe the situation. Notice what is going on. Don't judge yourself. "Self-awareness is a deliberate practice."
[5] Keep a good-stuff box! Include nice notes, good evaluations, things you feel proud of - anything to motivate you when things feel difficult.
[6] Find people who believe in you! Keep them at the forefront of your mind. Keep a literal picture of them on your desk, if you need to. People believe in you and want you to succeed. Hold onto that energy.
This presentation was by Dorothy Bisbee from Harvard's Academic Resource Center. Harvard friends: check out the ARC's calendar for future events! This session was very, very helpful - especially today. 🙂
