There’s a big difference between a goyish person saying “oh! are jews fasting today?” and them saying “are you doing your jew fast?” Putting these examples into a more negative context clearly shows that the use of “Jew” is nuanced. It can be neutral or dehumanizing. Be mindful.
It’s not as simple as “no goyish person should ever use the word Jew” or “we are Jews and it’s not a dirty word” because a lot of antisemitic rhetoric pretty much uses Jew like a slur and deep down, we know when it feels bad vs. when it feels perfectly fine (or even affirming.)
So, to the goyish person reading this, here’s a basic guide:
• Never use it as an adjective (i.e. Jew account)
• If you’re using it as a noun (i.e. “that user is a Jew”) make sure your tone & intent is clearly positive or neutral.
If you aren’t sure, just say “Jewish person.”
