So, considering doing early voting. A little disappointed in the response I got from the Lynn County Auditor’s office. First, let me say the lady I spoke to was very friendly, and I know she doesn’t make the rules. On their site, it says that accessible ballot marking will be 1/
Available for those of us who are blind. However, when I phoned, I was advised that while early voting will be available starting on Monday, it’s curb side. She advised I check back later in the week to see if anything’s changed, which I will do. But, she stated that if the 2/
Accessible marking devices can’t be brought out curbside, I’ll either have to have whoever drives me assist in marking my ballot, or they’ll provide a rep from the Republican and Democratic parties to assist in the filling out of my inaccessible ballot. 3/
I have a few problems with this scenario. First, it takes away the secret ballot for me as a blind person. The whole point of going in person is to use the machine so I can fill out my ballot independently. Second let’s say I take Uber/Lyft. Not sure I want to trust a driver 4/
I hardly know to fill out something that important. Or, on the flip side, even if I DO go with someone I know/trust, I’m already seeing posts from blind and disablnd individuals who are being told their friends/family won’t take them to vote unless they vote a certain way. 5/
So, even if I have that luxury, I’m also trying to think about those who don’t, and/or who are afraid or unable to advocate for themselves. Finally, I know they say they can provide me with a rep from each of the two major parties to assist, but as one who’s voting Libertarian 6/
In any races where such a candidate is running, I’m not sure I trust reps from the two majors to not compromise my ballot. Even if they don’t, and if they do things ethically, should I I as a blind person not have the same access to the polls as everyone else? 7/
Last tweet in this thread, so...I’m doing the early voting due to the fact I’ll be departing town on October 6 for an extended period of time, and won’t be here on Election Day. I’m glad they offer early voting, but please, make it accessible to ALL voters.
