11 months ago i had never designed a product. 3 months ago i had never designed brand.

before that, i blew $11k+ for designs. all because i thought "i am not good enough".

/thread of our own brand design exploration for @tryamie
in general we set out to capture feelings. and moments. we described it as "movement in stillness".
we wanted to get really close.

we prioritized brand in Amie's lifecycle. it seemed ridiculously early.

it was early. we also set out to build something lasting. so there wasn't a too early.

it's less about productivity. and more about joy and feels.
"Your direction is more important than your speed"

quite controversial in times when we all use apps that are blazingly fast.
"Setting and achieving goals is the primary objective of Amie. The journey too, is inspirational and telling"

this is due to the history of Amie (i.e. concept in 06/19-03/20)

still something we will live inside the product.
i just love hands. and the stories they can tell.

reminded me of when stuart, my airbnb host, helped me surf. i had done it before but he helped me learn. he taught me how to fish.

ever after stuart (he surfs for 58y), surfing felt easy.
something magical about those two people.

especially the kiddo with his dad (?) in the shot. his dad basically saw himself within his son.
"Made by our hands–defined by yours."

found in @rimowa's hand book. we are building the rimowa of apps. long lasting. made for the creatives. every little detail is refined.

"If you eat something that tastes awful, you assume the food is bad. But when you use a product, that you can't use, you assume it's you. Don't you?"

— Jony Ive (with his amazing british accent)
history doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes.
rams + ive

i actually love how ive stole from rams. but the way he stole would have never upset rams. they have strong mutual respect for each other.
"Who wants a stylus? You have to get em', put em' away. You lose them. Yuck."

it was time for a change.
"Gestaltung ist Haltung"

i love the few times when german is a little more pointed that english.

helmut schmid also made me appreciate the craft of a font.
"My heart belongs to the details. I actually always found them to be more important than the big picture. Nothing works without details. They are everything, the baseline of quality.

my philosophy for @tryamie. thank you dieter rams. for everything.
these two pictures look the exact same to me.

it is very by design when people say "Amie feels soft and human"

also: how doesn't want to feel goosebumps?
what this is? no idea.

it felt like an early morning.
"How are you, really?"

inspired by @wnrstweets
"Don't be the best. Be the only."

— Kevin Kelly

we don't check out other apps in our "space". we don't want to compete. we don't want to dilute what we're building.
"To make something great, just re-do it, re-do it, re-do it."

— Kevin Kelly

no words.
"Every step of the experience can be honed, smoothened and improved, to the point that it's so good you just can't take it. Butter is deceptively simple. A single ingredient that yet does so much"

@nickgrossman gave me the guts to go for an ever smoother experience.
"What if we charted progress differently?"

do we have answers for this question yet? no.

will we eventually? i hope so.
"In photography defocus is called bokeh. Does this make us consider it innate?"

this (much worse) quote is from me, lol. what i mean is that we need to need to build for focus AND for defocus. there's no point building something that pressures people into PRODUCTIVITY PORN
intimate.
"The traditional productivity app is binary; on or off; complete or incomplete. Does this match complexities of modern life?"

it doesn't. Amie v1 will be a very smooth experience of the current. with an increasing version number, our figma prototypes get ever wilder.
