Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's relationship through her songs: a real Love Story.
Gorgeous
A song about the first time Taylor and Joe met, describing the connexion they both felt. The singer immediately had a huge crush on the actor because of his accent, his eyes and his dimples.
King Of My Heart
Taylor thought that no one would stick by her side because of her reputation. But then they started seeing each other and though they tried to keep it “casual”, deep down the singer knew she was falling for him.
Delicate
Taylor knew her feelings were getting stronger, but she didn’t want the actor to run away from her, so she second-guessed everything she did and said. By that time, her reputation was at its worst, so she started to believe that Joe maybe wanted to stay by her side.
I Think He Knows
In this fun song, Taylor looks back at the time when she tried to hide her feelings from Joe, recalling how a part of herself had already accepted that he knew that she was falling for him and he still stayed.
Cruel Summer
By the end of the horrible Summer of 2016, Taylor knew she was in love with the actor, but she didn’t want to accept her feelings. In the 28th night of September, she ended up confessing to him and he just grinned back at her.
Dress
Once Taylor and Joe confessed their feelings, they decided to keep their relationship a secret, playing as just “friends”, but she had a hard time keeping her hands to herself.
Dancing With Our Hands Tied
Although no one knew about their relationship, the singer was afraid of what could happen if the media and the public found out, knowing not a lot of people would stand the scrutiny, especially with all the hate she was getting.
Cornelia Street
Their relationship blossomed in the singer’s Cornelia Street apartment in NY, but her own insecurities (listen to The Archer) got the best of her and Taylor decided to broke up with the actor, but he simply refused to accept it.
Call It What You Want
Although the doubts and ups-and-downs, Taylor has finally accepted that Joe is in love with her and wants to be build a relationship. She isn’t sure exactly about what they have, but she knows that they love each other, so she asks him to run away with her.
New Year’s Day
After the storm, the hate and the dead of her reputation, Taylor found herself in a beautiful relationship, sharing her life with someone who didn’t want to be with her under the spotlight, but also stay for the morning after. She had found real love.
False God
In this track, Taylor compares their love to that of a religious devotee. The intensity of their feelings scares her, they took a big risk by committing themselves to this relationship. There's arguing and (sexual) tension. But at the end, love persists.
Afterglow
Like it’s shown in False God, a healthy relationship also includes some fighting. Afterglow is a song about forgiveness, about knowing when to set your pride aside, acknowledge your mistakes and simply say “sorry”.
Paper Rings
This song is a recollection of memories from their relationship: the night they met, celebrating New Year’s… Though this song is a bop, the singer is actually confessing that she doesn’t care much about what the future holds for her, as long as they’re together.
London Boy
Since Joe is British, they spent an important part of their time in London, were they hided for the first few months of their relationship. Though the singer loves her country (but no its actual government), she fell in love with London.
Lover
This song is a declaration of love, not only in the romantic, movie-like moments, but also in the regular, messy days, when you just want to cuddle in the couch with your lover. The bridge can be understood as Taylor’s wedding vows.
the lakes
The couple went to the Lake District on their three-year anniversary trip (9/28/2019), getting lost into nature. There, Taylor fantasise about the idea of running away from the world and hiding in a cabin in the middle of the woods, with the only company of her lover.
invisible string
The singer recalls their relationship and all the coincidences that brought them two together. The motive of the string, original from an Asian mythology and known as the “red thread of fate”, represents the idea that they have always been meant to be.
peace
The final song combines every feeling shared in the previous tracks, with Taylor finally accepting her circumstances, but this time knowing that it would (will) be enough if she isn’t able to give Joe a “normal” life.
