@AlecMacGillis has done an ASTOUNDINGLY good job of explaining why many of our schools stayed closed – in the face of MUCH evidence they could reopen.
Media sensationalism. Politics. A fear-centered conversation.
It's all there. And brilliantly told. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/10/05/the-students-left-behind-by-remote-learning

It brought me to tears. Plus a primal scream at the end.
I'm so glad to see pointed questions about which stories were told and amplified, and which ones went untold.
It must be said that many of us were pointing to untold stories back in July...

And asking why only @anya1anya had told story of 50,000 children in non-renovated schools with no spikes. I must have asked 100 times. Often to @nytimes reporters.
And asking if anyone had looked into clusters in NYC in Spring.
And hearing crickets.

There were plenty of Q's for the media, from the community of folks who scratched their heads about the coverage, and increasingly, expressed alarm.
I think we all wondered why others weren't outraged... because of the impact of closures on children like Shemar.

Now we are seeing the inevitable cost of closures. "Missing kids."
"District leaders said attendance may improve once schools can safely resume full-time, in-person learning."

At the same time as we get a fresh batch of US evidence to show that schools don't need to be closed in most of the US.
Florida's school reopening for >50% of Ss is not causing spikes, contrary to the dire warnings.

Right now, we need a hard pivot and an assist from the media.
We need a public info campaign for parents and teachers about the growing body of evidence on safe reopening.
(Including notes that masking is believed to matter, etc.)

That conversation should center the full-time reopening option, not hybrid, because hybrid is both backbreaking for teachers and, it appears, less safe than FT.

And the question we should be asking – as parents, as reporters, as citizens who care about children – is:
Why are we NOT reopening every elementary school full time?
There should be a compelling reason NOT to reopen.

It is far from too late to change course, and for districts to accelerate reopening, based on this data. It's happening every day.
And when we are lucky, a reporter like @blythebernhard captures the story.

Thank you @AlecMacGillis for telling this critical story so effectively, &with empathy.
It gives voice to what many parents & teachers have witnessed – w/o knowing how we could affect the troubling discourse around reopenings.
(God knows we tried.)

Watching #edwriters sharing this piece today is the biggest thing giving me hope.
Please read it, share it, skywrite it above school district offices.
And ask for the course-corrections that we need, for children's sake.
