WHAT IS BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER?
—a thread made by a person with BPD. please give this a read and retweet.
PLEASE READ THESE TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE CONTINUING:

tw // mental illness, suicide , suicidal thoughts , self harm , eating disorder behaviors , self hatred , dissociation , drugs , sex
i really want to break the stigma around this disorder. the media has portrayed us, along with other people with similar disorders, as villainous, toxic, and bad people. but i promise we’re not. we are neurodivergent, and we should be treated like every other neurdivergent +
person within the community. this is a thread for personal education, for people with significant others and friends with bpd, people who may suspect they have bpd (dont base your diagnosis off this thread, if you can get a professional, please do, but i know not everyone can do+
that, but please do external research because it’s a very serious diagnosis). but, anyways, onto the actual thread.
WHAT IS BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD)?

it is a mental illness where a person’s relationships with people, emotions, self-image, and emotions are impaired. this usually causes the person to become incredibly insecure of whichever of those things they’re struggling with
this causes INCREDIBLY impulsive behavior which may include some or all of the following:

self harm, binge eating/food restrictions, impulsive sex, attention seeking behavior, suicidal thoughts/actions, substance abuse, getting into near death situations just to feel something
one of the most prominent symptoms are relationship issues. people with borderline tend to want to cut off people at random. this is because of the “they hate me and want to leave me, so i have to leave first to avoid getting my feelings hurt” mentality. they require A LOT of+
reassurance if you’re going to be close to them. please try not to get frustrated, because they are struggling a lot just by being close to people. it can be really hard. if they ask if you hate them or something along the lines of that, please reassure them.
PLEASE DO NOT CALL PEOPLE WITH THIS DISORDER “TOXIC” PEOPLE.

this just perpetuates their disconnect from people. if you dont feel like you can handle being friends with someone with bpd, simply don’t if you’re gonna act like they’re a bad person for having a mental illness.
A LIST OF BORDERLINE SYMPTOMS THAT SOCIETY TRIES TO NORMALIZE
(if you do this, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have bpd, but they are symptoms)

the “are you mad at me?” or “do you hate me?” texts when the smallest things happen

freaking out over the smallest things+
and possibly feeling like they world is ending over them/feeling suicidal over them i.e someone leaving you on read, someone interacting with others more than you/seeming like they’re ignoring you, weight gain, acne, missing assignments, someone using a rough tone/yelling, etc
WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS PEOPLE USUALLY IGNORE/DONT TALK ABOUT?
(similar to what i said earlier, these are symptoms, but it doesn’t mean you have it)
-changing looks, opinions, etc to match the people around you to avoid being left behind
-intense feelings of emptiness
-experiencing you emotions Very strongly
-imagining abandonment a lot
-anger/irritability episodes.
WHAT CAUSES BORDERLINE?

more often than not, people with borderline have experienced some sort of trauma, usually based upon abuse. after they are freed from their abuse, their brain is rewired to still believe that everyone is similar to their abuser in some cases.
some research suggests that genetics may be a factor in developing bpd as well.
people with bpd often experience HEAVY mood swings, depression, anxiety, PTSD, dissociation, and more. its pretty rare to see someone with only borderline.
ARE THERE WAYS TO HELP WITH BORDERLINE?

there aren’t very many medications for borderline in particular. usually people with bpd get put on mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anxiety medications, go to therapy, or get hospitalized in the worst cases.
despite it being treated as if its some rare mental illness by society, 1.6% of people in the U.S have it, which is roughly (if i did the math right) 525 thousand people.
okay, i think that’s all i have to say. i may add more later. the main purpose of this thread is education. i’m really tired of my mental illness that i cant help being treated like some kind of villain trait. people with borderline are not scary. they are just healing and may
have some difficulties in their life. this doesn’t mean you get to be ableist towards them, labeling them as “toxic” people. this label hurts a lot, especially when they’re trying to heal. if they do something bad, gently tell them rather than getting upset. we already struggle.
