Wait a second. "Candice Parscale says her husband chambered a round into a pistol during a heated exchange between the two." She has bruises on her arms and face. So the actual story seems to be that Brad Parscale attacked his wife and threatened to kill her with a loaded gun? https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1310599327560224768
"A heated exchange between the two." Sounds like only one person was bringing the literal heat, though?
And this is the version of the story FROM POLICE, one of whom is Parscale's close personal friend and came to defuse the situation. So.
Lots of folks making the good point that if Parscale was black / poor / not connected to the police he very well could have ended up dead. That's true. But this is actually a model for how things SHOULD work. It shouldn't be a privilege to walk out of a police interaction alive.
To clarify a point that wasn't clear from the previous article: The bruises on Candice Parscale were, she says, from earlier in the week -- so this was going on for some time. She called the police Sunday because Brad loaded a gun and she believed he was going to kill himself.
Domestic abuse can be hard to understand, and can also be wrapped up in mental illness. A lot of abusive men kill themselves and their partners (and sometimes their kids). A lot of abusive men threaten to kill themselves as a way of controlling and terrorizing their partners.
"If you leave me, I'll kill myself" is a common abuse tactic. It can also be a sign of mental illness -- but manipulating someone else by telling them that they are responsible for your suicide if they leave is always abusive, even if the person making the threat is mentally ill.
Some abusers also struggle with mental illness; many do not. Some abusers who threaten suicide are mentally ill; many others are not, and use the threat as pure manipulation. That doesn't make mental illness an excuse for abuse. It just means it's complicated.
