Man City's defensive line troubles: A thread.
Communication is the key for every backline and it feels like City's right now does not have one.

City vs Norwich - Sept 2019
This is where it all started, Laporte was injured the game before and the backline consisted of Otamendi, Stones, Zinchenko, Walker. The picture represents the start of somewhat a recent trend by City defence. This led to the Cantwell goal.
City vs Spurs - Feb 2020

Otamendi rushing to Lo Celso resulting in complete wreckage of the defensive line held. Son makes a run in behind and scores. The left side stays back, the right side charges in. Where is the communication lads? Why do you have to charge in?!!!
City vs Arsenal - FA Cup (instance 1)
Laporte drilled in a long ball to Jesus who lost the header. Again, slow to react to the surroundings which let Aubameyang run in behind and almost score. The line held here is shambolic, no communication!
City vs Arsenal - FA CUP (instance 2)
The defence didn't learn from the first half and this time Aubameyang doesn't miss his chance. Mendy plays him onside and one pass from Tierney in behind has guarenteed a clear cut goal scoring opportunity. Same mistakes.
City vs Lyon - Champions League
The picture explains itself! Although Laporte was tripped slightly, there was no need to cover Dembele who's obviously quicker than him and is miles ahead of the rest, City try to play a offside trap and again one man in defence messes it up.
City vs Bournemouth - July 2020
Stones tries to play a high line here without watching what his fellow defenders are doing. Otamendi doesn't follow up to Stones and it results in Wilson running in behind and laying a simple pass for Brooks to score.
City vs Leicester - Sept 2020
We saw the run in behind again by Vardy 3-4 times yesterday. Different year, same defensive problems. The picture is one instance of a simple run in behind by Vardy, and Garcia ball watching which led to the penalty.
Conclusion: There seems to a trouble in communication of where to play an offside trap and where not to. If one defender tries to play offside trap, the other doesn't follow up. This is where a leader in defence is required. Communication is completely lacking at the back.
