I’m in Rome. Watching America from foreign shores gives you an interesting perspective. As gov’t protects criminal activity of police, as armed citizens walk the streets as vigilantes, as the authoritarian leader predicts violence before he cedes power, I’m reminded of Mussolini

America has always prepared to defend our way of life from the enemies that do not have our best interest at heart. We fought for our independence from an imperial monarchy, we fought fascism, communism’s denial of democracy, and the threat of terrorism.

But it is our hypocrisy of a fair and equal democracy that will destroy America from within. Our inability to live up to our values and affirm that every citizen, no matter race, creed, or gender will enjoy the privileges and protection of our constitution.....

This hypocrisy will be the end of this democratic experiment. We continue to allow the unjust killing of Black lives, the abject poverty that reflects a wealth disparity, mass incarceration for profit, xenophobia that prevents immigration and allows for unconstitutional policy.
