I have often seen a cropped version of this image featuring just Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson (on the left, under the umbrella). It's really interesting to see the full context - Rivera and Johnson are rallying alongside their lesbian comrades. https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47e3-57a1-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99
I think it is great and so important how much incredible work has been done in recent years on the central role of Rivera and Johnson in trans history. But their legacy is so much more than this - they campaigned against poverty, racism, for sex workers - and yes, for gay rights.
I feel this is a super important lesson for contemporary trans activists. A reminder from our history. No matter how much transphobes tell us that we have no place fighting alongside our cis gay, lesbian, and bi comrades, we are always at our most powerful when working together.
