I was talking to someone this morning who earns more than 20K a month and struggled with work from home and having to take care of children. I suggested them to offer better pay for a housekeeper, say about 2K, and the person retaliated saying that it's too much.
Before that they were telling me that they were close to a mental breakdown having to manage work and the household at the same time. Strangely they even told me that they rather resign, and lose 20K of monthly pay rather than pay 2K for a housekeeper. I don't get their maths.
I told them that we underestimate the importance of people who do care work that's why we think such work doesn't deserve better pay. We are willing to put ourselves under so much stress than let others help us when we can afford to give better pay.
I am ashamed to have to listen the person told me that paying RM800 to a housekeeper is too much already. This is coming from someone who earns 20K. I guess they deserve the stress for constantly underestimating the value of care work.
