And I’m back in the room. I’ve had a week off Twitter and during that time I’ve worked out how to clean up my timeline to try and ensure that I don’t see the type of unpleasant content that I find troubling. 1/12
Twitter is always trying to deliver content that will keep you coming back, so their algorithm is designed to deliver content from people you engage with or hashtags that you click. The problem is the algorithm can’t distinguish between nice stuff... 2/12
...(like great fundraising tips or pictures of bunny rabbits) and unpleasant things. If you’ve engaged with an abusive account in some way, it thinks, “Oh, you must like them loads, I’ll fill your feed with stuff from them!” 3/12
And there is no difference between a tweet, a retweet or a like. Twitter will deliver all to your timeline. Yep, if you like a tweet, twitter just pumps it out just like a retweet. So if an account that Twitter thinks you value likes something unpleasant or gets abusive...4/12
...watch out timeline, here comes the negativity. So here are some tips to make Twitter a better place to be. Compile a list of the accounts that are turning twitter into a toxic place for you and unfollow and mute them. 5/12
If you just unfollow, any of your remaining followers who retweet or engage in a conversation with them or like their tweets will drop them in your timeline. Then, start cleaning up the stuff that’s delivered to you in your feed (unfollowing and muting is just the start). 6/12
Each tweet that Twitter suggests to you is defined as a ‘type’ and you can mute ‘types’ of tweets too. You can go to your muted words setting on desktop here https://twitter.com/settings/muted_keywords on mobile it will be via the gear icon. 7/12
You’ll see an immediate reduction in the number of liked tweets in your feed. But some will keep appearing. When you see them, click on the small arrow and click on the option “I don’t like this tweet.” 9/12
You’ll be given an option to reduce the number of liked tweets that are delivered to you. Click on this and your twitter feed will get cleaner. There are other ways to do this. Check out this link (where the above advice comes from) for more tips https://howtodotechystuff.wordpress.com/2017/07/27/hate-seeing-other-peoples-likes-on-twitter-some-options-to-try/ 10/12
As a bonus, you’ll start to see more actual tweets and retweets from people that you value. And to really maximise your contact with that community, put together a list of people who deliver great content and who you enjoy interacting with and use that as your main feed. 11/12
That’s what I’ve just started to do and it's made thing better for me. But if you are happy, stick as you are. All I'm doing is making my Twitter experience more valuable. Now, Let’s get back to normal chums… 12/12
PS. Point 7 on the list should be 'suggest' not 'suggeat' Thanks @BeateSorum
