A huge welcome to all of our new students and staff. The Library is here to make your academic life easier if we can.

If you're brand new, start here: a thread of #UoYTips to help you settle in...
First of all, let us say this: it's an extraordinary time to be starting a degree. No one else has had to enter to the academic world quite like you are doing. It must be incredibly challenging.

So - go easy on yourselves. Give yourselves a break. Be kind to yourselves...
If you'd like the briefest of introductions to how the library works, you can't go far wrong with The Library Minute. (It's actually 65 seconds long, ssshhh* don't tell anyone.)

*That's literally the only time you'll see this account ssshhing anyone
Now for some more detail.

#UoYTips 1: our buildings *are* open. The main library is currently open from 8am until midnight, 7 days a week. That may change! Who can predict anything these days? But it's what we're doing for now.

Here is a Virtual Tour:
What about those of you who can't or don't currently wish to visit the library in person? #UoYTips 2: there are LOADS of ways to use our services at a distance.

We've made a video for you too:
Videos aren't for everyone, though. Sometimes you just want to read some introductory info. Here's a page you might like, it's called Information For New Students:

https://www.york.ac.uk/library/info-for/new-students/
#UoYTips 3: we have incredible resources to help you study. You can look them up in YorSearch: http://yorsearch.york.ac.uk

YorSearch looks like this.
You'll also find that our Academic Liaison Librarians have put together Subject Guides for each Department, bringing together all the useful resources in one place.

Find yours here: https://subjectguides.york.ac.uk/
#UoYTips 4: we'll support your Skills development. You can visit our Skills Guides here: https://subjectguides.york.ac.uk/skills

They've got details of our online skills training, Digital Wednesdays, and tutorials you can work through at your own pace.
Last but perhaps most importantly is #UoYTips 5. We'll help you online and in person.

The Help Desk is in the Morrell.

Our virtual help desk runs 7 days a week too. You can email us or phone us (details here: https://www.york.ac.uk/library/contact/) or use the Chat https://www.york.ac.uk/library/contact/chat/
There is a special guide that expands on all of the #UoYTips above at https://bit.ly/uoytips .

That's probably enough to get you started; we might come back to this thread over the next couple of weeks and add more info when it's useful to do so. Any questions, let us know.
Welcome to York!
