When you get walloped as emphatically was last night it’ll never just be one thing which causes it. Everyone was off. But the loss of Jonny is so much bigger than the mentions it gets, especially from outsiders. One of the most underrated players in the whole league.
Nuno has spoken of a shift in the way Wolves play this season and I think the first signs of that vision were evident last night, but they’ll naturally get lost in analysis of performance and result. Semedo is going to be crucial to this change, but Jonny would have been too.
Semedo has licence to vacate that wing back position and make runs which both overlap the winger or burst centrally to join Raul. He lacked the match sharpness, especially second half, plus the understanding with other players at this stage, to do that as well as he will soon.
Whenever he goes marauding the plan is for CB’s to shift across and the LWB to tuck in to make a four. Jonny would be absolutely perfect for this. And it’s really obvious that Marcal was brought in to do exactly that short term in his absence. Vinagre just cannot play this role.
This explains two things: a) why an upgrade on Doherty was so vital, because the way Semedo plays is what Nuno wants for this new role and it’s not Doherty’s game. Doc is a more patient wing back, popping up unnoticed in the box with well timed late runs. Semedo is so different.
And b) why Boly is continued with on the right side when it seems clear to everyone that he’s better on the left. It’s possibly because medium term, when this new plan has bedded in, he’ll spend a lot of time slotted in as a hybrid CB/RB when Wolves are attacking.
Like any little shifts in ethos it’ll take time for the players to grasp it, but for all this to work as intended, Wolves need the quality of Jonny in that hybrid LWB/LB role on the left. Or at least Marcal if he’s decent in it, too early to say. But definitely not Vinagre.
Last night was garbage and everyone worried by it has every right to be. The one thing we do know is that throughout his time at Wolves, every time something’s looked broken Nuno has fixed it. It probably be wise to bank on him to do so again.
