THREAD: Another match where there was a number of brilliant performances but I've decided to focus on Robin Koch. In the first two games we saw glimpses of his quality but yesterday we saw him put it together for the full match. #LUFC
Playing as the middle centre back in a back three, Robin was tested from the off. Sheffield United will have looked at the two penalties he gave away, both incorrect in my opinion but nevertheless, they targeted him from the start.
When he was tasked with man-marking, he did it really well. He was patient with his defending, not going in too aggressive where he could have gave fouls away or be turned. He timed his tackles well, even when he was on the back foot running towards his own goal.
Sheffield United went long so that they could try and beat Leeds press so it was important that he won his individual battles. He won 6/9 aerial duels, the joint most in the game alongside captain Liam Cooper.
The times where he couldn't win the initial ball, he stayed calm and picked the right moment to engage, get a foot in and come away with the ball.
Overloading wide areas and playing balls into the box is something Sheffield United do. When they brought Sharp on, they had a player capable of finding space in the box. This made it even more important that Robin stayed switched on and he did, making vital interceptions.
What impressed me the most about his performance was his passing. He completed 68/78 passes, with 40 of them being forward. He looked to play passes through the lines rather than playing the safer pass.
One of the reasons we signed Robin was for his passing range from the back, capable of playing diagonal balls from deep and playing accurate long passes in behind the opposition defence. He showed his full passing range yesterday and barely gave the ball away.
With added competition brought in this week in the form of Llorente, Robin showed that he is more than good enough to keep his starting birth. Given the intensity of the game, he could have quite easily struggled but didn’t. A very good performance from the German International.
