tw // natural disasters

we should normalize putting tws over natural disasters! and heres why:
(rt to spread the word, this is extremely important to me personally)
tws for this thread, in order:

// natural disasters , anxiety , depression , PTSD , negative health and mental symptoms , personal vulnerability , health crisises , suicide , flashbacks (if i missed any please comment them!)
natural disasters are a major cause of the development of several mental disorders, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and it affects both adults and children.
it's MUCH easier to develop these disorders as a child because of the lack of mental maturity the child has gone through. the mental vulnerability of a child is a huge factor in the development of these disorders.
some symptoms some people get from being triggered by natural disasters:

- insomnia
- a loss of appetite
- unable to concentrate
- difficulty to breathe
- increased heartrate
- flashbacks/nightmares
- mood swings
- survivors guilt
- loss of religious faith
- confusion
(cont.)

- difficulty making decisions
- headaches
- nausea
- chest pain
- dizziness
- change in interpersonal relationships skills
- personal vulnerability
- anxiety
- depression
- PTSD
.
now to address some terms i've used above:
PERSONAL VVULNERABILITY:

Not only are natural disasters very traumatic to people that have been through them, but they also can effect others through relation! how does this work you may ask?
well, imagine you're in Austrailia, and you have a family member in Brazil. If your family member is affected by this natural disaster, you could be affected too. the helplessness of not being able to contact/protect your loved ones can cause the development of trauma
this is called "personal vulnerability" and it is very damaging on one's mental state! this is most common in children due to the inability for the child's brain to process trauma. however, it still affects adults and should be taken seriously among all age groups
CHANGE IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: these are skills we use every single day when communicating with others. usually used when listening to others and speaking back to them! they also include how you control your emotions
SURVIVORS GUILT (otherwise known as survivors syndrome/survivors disorder): survivors guilt is pretty self explanatory. its the guilt from surviving an event that others may not have (such as natural disasters, airplane crashes, lung transplant survivors, holocaust survivors, etc)
survivors guilt includes its own symptoms, such as:

- flashbacks
- irritability
- feeling numb or disconnected
- lack of motivation
- headaches
- stomach aches
- palpitations
- suicidal thoughts
- fear
here are some more facts on natural disasters and their effects on mental health:

- 15% of females and 19% of males are exposed to a natural disaster in their lifetime

- 25% of people exposed to a natural disaster could be diagnosed with PTSD 6 months after the event
- natural disasters cause families to move away from cities in disaster-affected areas, and unemployment rates can rise over 30%
- PTSD is prevalent in 30% to 40% of direct victims while the general population has a PTSD prevalence of 5% to 19%
WHY ITS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOULD TRIGGER WARN PEOPLE WHEN POSTING ABOUT NATURAL DISASTERS it should be obvious by now, but these things can effect people grately! it takes 3 seconds to type tw // *natural disaster*, so why not save people from hours of relapsing and episodes?
thank you if you took your time to read this. if you'd like, please share this post to get the word out. i see this being ignored on the daily and it really affects me and many many others every single day! <3 if you go through this too, stay strong. you got this. i love you.
