By dear trad brothers and sisters, have to say something to you all. Almost all of you might already be thinking on the same lines as this, hence this isnt really meant to like educate or something like that, just saying coz I felt like doing so. I make an open admission that+
my knowlegde about scriptures is zero, and many of you might know much better than me on this. Its great to read scriptures, understand them and try to implement the good things in them in reality. But my humble request to you is that if there is something in a certain scripture+
that is actually in the present times causing harm to somebody or some community, then please have the openness to discuss it with those who would have a problem with it. Talk to them, try to address their doubts and if you lack the knowledge to do so, please direct them to+
people who know better than you. Even after that, if there is something that is like really unacceptable and derogatory towards someone then we let us be open enough to accept the entire scripture except the part of it that would end up causing someone harm and try to implement +
the rest of it that isn't harmful to anyone. I would like to share an example that made me write this thread. I havent read the Manusmriti at all. But I knew this from the people who have read it, that it advises shudras to serve Brahmins and Kshatriyas. You can correct me if +
you think i've misquoted something. This is just one example though, i am talking in general about scriptures and not just about the Manusmriti specifically. I also go one step ahead to say that it might have been right in those times when shudras were mostly agrarian people and+
most Brahmins were really poor and had to depend on others for food and money while the Kshatriyas primarily were supposed to protect the country from invaders. It might be true back in those times that a Shudra was free from other duties which a Brahmin wasnt and hence things+
like this were advised to them as a compensation. Though I dont know whether it was meant like this or not. But if we think of this in today's day and date, professions aren't caste specific. Not every Brahmin performs rituals and not every shudra is engaged in agriculture. So+
If we are going to apply this in today's date, it is going to be definitely unfair towards them to be asking them to do so. Why should a shudra "serve" Upper castes today? Today, when anyone can choose any profession of their choice, and if today the extent to which you serve+
Dharma doesnt depend on the jaati you come from, then obviously, why shud respect be dependent on your jaati? I know most of you already believe in this, but one of my Shudra friends on twitter just today told me that there are some who literally believe everything written in +
the scriptures and want an implementation of the same entirely. Why would he not ask a counterquestion? Obviously if he feels that this wont be good for his community if implemented today (which is true!), and if he is polite enough to say that just that one thing in the +
scripture is not right to be implemented while he does respect the other good things written in there, he desreves to be listened too and his doubts be addressed. He has been called names too for having asked this question. If you tell him that he should serve others coz he's +
supposed to do so as per the Manusmriti, why would he even be with us if we are going to treat him like that? Though he hasn't said anything like not being with us and all, this is a point worth thinking about. I equally reject the "varna by deeds" nonsense in the thread+
i've pinned on my profile, and as ive said in that thread, rather than moving people up and down the varnas, we must let people be where they are on the varna spectrum and asscociate respect with their deeds. But then for that we first have to do away with the respect that+
we associate with varna, coz only then we can associate it with deeds, letting people's varna be what it is! I am an ardent opponent of annihilation of jaati, as ive said already in my pinned thread and have given reasons for it. But its a request to some who dont associate +
respect with deeds but jaati, to please consider about doing so, so that nobody is felt left out and true equality would exist despite diversity. I know most of you already do so, so this is about nobody in specific, just in case you dont, please consider doing it. Thank you+
and please RT this thread if you agree so that it reaches maximum people.
