Only The Brave interpreted FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE aka a ride full of religious trauma

a thread;

(i'm crying while writing this so pls be nice)
disclaimer: i'm not insinuating this is the real meaning of the song, it's just how I link it to myself and no i'm not claiming it has anything to do with louis' personal experiences

tw // religious trauma and homophobia
First verse:
"pour mercy, mercy on me, set fire to history"

Basically begging for forgiveness, knowing that what you're doing is historically wrong and you just want to separate yourself from that guilt
"I'm breaking my own rules, i'm crying like a fool"

growing up christian you've got the rules of what's right and wrong engraved deep in your brain, breaking them makes you feel this self hatred and fear of acting freely
"Tall stories on the page, short glories on the fade"

portraying yourself to the world as someone you're not and giving the people what they would expect from you, but privately dealing with your own battles and slowing becoming a true version of yourself
(two sides for this line)
"I've been close enough to touch, but I never cared for love"

side one: being close enough to someone and having that chance of going further but not really being interested or not feeling what you're supposed to or expected to (yes, a straight couple)
ORRRR... being close enough to someone the same gender and feeling that attraction or magnet that demands physical touch, but being in denial or suppressing those feelings for your own good
Pre-chorus:
"it's a church of burnt romances"

yeah sort of self explanatory, a religion that's held responsible for the amount of romances they've prohibited, denied or simply never happened due to their brainwashing
"and i'm too far gone to pray"

you've gone against the religion, broken the rules and you're so deep into "sin" that praying won't save you from the punishment you've been told you'd get
"It's a solo song and it's only for the brave"

a song dedicated who those who are brave enough to go against the rules and do ir for love
Chorus:
"If the truth tell, darling, you'll feel
like there ain't enough dying stars in your sky"

confessing the "sins" you've done and coming clean will give you this feeling that there is not enough to wish upon for your own good
"It's a tall tale, and it's only hello, hello, no goodbye"

It's all basically a lie in which once you're in there is no say out, and even you've come to terms with yourself there will always be that part of you that's stuck with it
Verse 2:
"Pour mercy, mercy on me, I'll fall upon my knees and they'll say, "I told you so, come on, when you know, you know""

once again begging for that forgiveness for what's perceived as "wrong", but it not being granted since you've always been told the consequences for it
"All the lonely shadow dances from the cradle to the grave"

those people who never had the courage to break out of "that shell" or just weren't able to are going to be lonely souls that'll "dance" by themselves their whole life (like the target shot from the walls music video)
"It's a solo song and it's only for the brave"

once again, a song about a kind of love only those who were brave enough will get to experience
