Just got off the phone with a new volunteer with the most amazing story. Back in the 70's, her son had to go to a disabled school because he wasn't admitted to the school that all the other children went to. It was run by the State and charged 10% of the parent's gross income.
The parents of the school banded together to have a meeting with public officials to try to end the discrimination agonist disabled students. They rented a church hall and invited politicians from every branch of government, local-all the way up to federal.
Nobody showed up. A few minutes went by, and in walks @JoeBiden. As he walks in and takes off his jacket, he apologizes for being late as the train from Washington had been running behind.
He sat there with those parents, listened, and talked to them. He told the "fight for all children, not just your own" He promised that he could do what he could. Later a federal law was passed, making states responsible for the education of all Children.
He was the only politician to show up and listen to those parents who were just trying to do right by their children. Ordinary citizens, like the rest of us. Many years later as Vice President, Joe Biden was giving a speech in PA.
While waiting for the speech to start, Bernie (my volunteer) told one of his staff at the time about her experience. She was invited back after the speech, and she and VP Joe Biden talked about her son, and how he was doing, and what he was up to now.
