So pedagogically, I don't like the plagiarism-first approach of teaching students to cite their sources. (A short thread)
Perhaps this is simply how I internalized the concept, but the idea of citing my sources always felt like a chore and quite bothersome. Yet it was a very scary concept that I could be accuse of plagiarism if I did not properly cite my sources.
The sense then is that my reader or teacher is drilling through my paper to see if I've made a mistake and that all attributions are present.
As I've started getting into reading scholarship however, my desire to dig into citations is not rooted in a disbelief of the person's honesty, but rather a desire to dig deeper by exploring the full data the author is presenting.
Flipping the script from "this is about honesty" to "this is about sharing knowledge" I feel would be helpful.
