1. There is an understandable lack of awareness of #publichealth & #contacttracing
Contact tracing is NOT new. It's a tool that's been around for centuries. A small PART of what public health health protection teams do every day in their efforts to control infectious diseases ...
2. Controlling infectious diseases at a public health level includes case investigation, setting investigation, source identification, exposure assessment, transmission evaluation, risk factor identification, contact identification, risk assessment ...
3. implementation of specific control measures, monitoring of impact of control measures, surveillance of numbers of cases & trends, identifying & managing outbreaks, limiting transmission, removing sources of infection & exposure pathways, & communicating ...
4. ALL of this is what #publichealth was doing everyday, long before #COVID19

A fraction of #publichealth action & infectious disease control is the actual identification & tracing of contacts. That is just a PART.

#publichealth is the sum of ALL of the parts ...
5. and ALL done in 🇮🇪 in 8 regional Public Health Departments staffed by tiny teams incl 32 Specialists & 8 Directors for a population ~5million - not enough for pre-COVID times never mind ...

(and none of these senior medics deemed worthy of consultant status @IMO_IRL )
6. These teams are highly trained & experienced but they are just too small for #COVID19 pandemic despite every person busting a gut day in day out 24/7.

But these are the teams you need leading the response, coz they know how to do it, they just need more resources ...
7. So why is contact tracing (the HSE's Contact Management Program) getting all the resources & the Public Health Departments are getting none????

8. Why are we not enabling the experts? Why do we think we can ignore the #publichealth expertise & simplify the pandemic response to contact tracing call centres?

If someone could enlighten me as to the rationale of this policy as we head full frontal into the 2nd phase of the #pandemic I would be eternally grateful
