@chestnut1904 Hi friends https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht"> I think I found an American Chestnut tree. Absolutely gobsmacked. Very tall, producing copious fuzzy little nuts. I’ve seen plenty of Chinese chestnuts and these are different.
Am I potentially right? Crying but don’t want to get my hopes too high
Oh lol forgot to say — this is slightly outside Burlington, Vermont https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🌰" title="Kastanie" aria-label="Emoji: Kastanie">
I forgot that you can see @ tweets on the feed now https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen" aria-label="Emoji: Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen"> so disclaimer to my pals that this is still plenty likely to be a diff variety or a cross https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💔" title="Gebrochenes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Gebrochenes Herz"> and I will still love it, don’t want to get my hopes too high (they’re high tho lol)
@chestnut1904 also — here’s the nuts from this angle to see the ...sunburst?
I’m struggling to fully compare to the Sweet/European chestnut, so maybe that’s where I’m off base? Stayed up thinking.
A few more leaf base / tip photos. Photo 1 is more American and photo 3 is more European, I’m not a biologist
My Dad took some measurements and thinks it’s about ~80ft tall
It’s also clear that there was original sections (entire top?) of tree that died off, consistent with American Chestnut sprouts regrowing.
