Borderline Personality Disorder was wrongly thought to be “on the borderline of psychosis” which caused stigma for people suffering from it. In fact, BPD is a mood disorder more on the lines of a “soft bipolar disorder”

BPD patients were believed to be irreparable at some point, and resistant to treatment, but research has shown a significant decrease in borderline traits after following Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
DBT is an approach that aims to break the negative thinking patterns and by time allowing patients to manage their emotions and thoughts to a great extent.
DBT requires learning a set of skills including mindfulness which helps patients become aware of themselves, their surroundings, their senses, and staying present in the current moment to avoid detachment and ultimately dissociation.
Learning Distress Tolerance in moments of crisis. How to self-soothe and distract yourself ultimately avoiding the urge to engage in self destructive behavior and coping strategies. This comes hand in hand with Emotional Regulation

Which helps you deal with your primary emotional reactions, recognize that you are consumed by emotions, tell the difference between your emotional brain and your rational brain.
And finally Interpersonal Effectiveness, which teaches you how to be clear in communicating what you want while managing your severe rapid mood changes from black to white. This skill can greatly improve relationships in terms of overcoming conflict.
Like a number of disorders, the cause of BPD is not fully understood. However, a number of risk factors such as childhood trauma, separation anxiety, and unstable/abusive relationships during adolescence or early adulthood seem to be most common among individuals.
All the info in this thread comes from mental healthcare professional therapists, lots of reading and research, and personal experience. No shame whatsoever. No fear whatsoever. Not anymore.
