growing up my dad watched CNN every night and we always had Time Magazine in the house. not the most radical media, but pretty decent and I think a big part of how I managed to grow up in a 80% red district and come out liberal-ish (Berkeley pushed me closer to where I am now)
I definitely attribute Time Magazine to me knowing literally anything about queer issues as a kid growing up in an insular isolated town that barely had any outside media available
now the only “news” my parents watch is Fox News opinion shows and they don’t read anything aside from the occasional online news link (which probably also comes from Fox News) and I just don’t know what happened
When I lived here during the recession 2009-2011 my dad still watched CNN (and my mom watched O’Reilly - but as far as I can remember that was the only thing on FoxNews they watched) and still subscribed to Time
Also I know my dad voted for John Kerry and then Obama the first time, but soured on him and voted Romney (despite Obama idk making it so I could get health insurance with my pre-existing condition???) and then Trump - which was the beginning of my estrangement with them
Estrangement was not just political, but also a lot of complicated factors, but them both voting for Trump didn’t help
I still don’t think they acknowledge that I am queer.
I don’t have a kid so I can’t answer this from experience, but I would think that voting for people - this includes their congressperson, who actively tries to dismantle the civil rights of my child is something I wouldn’t do???
But they keep doing it
My mom said how much she loved RBG and I had to choke back saying “yeah really? then how come you vote for people who are fundamentally opposed to everything she stood for??”
In regards to all the voter suppression and closing of voting stations she was like “I thought we fixed this fifty years ago” and I definitely said well it’s “your party” (she always says stuff about “her party”) that has been doing this. You’d know that if you paid any attention
Anyways this thread took a turn.

The original point was to ask what the hell happened in the last ten years that my dad “a moderate” has gone full FoxNews??
