Prison Thread 🧵 The lack of comprehension about what a prison actually is amazes me. In California at least, men’s prisons are brutal places. California has generally allowed correctional officers to choose what prison they wish to work at. 25 years ago when my mother
Entered the corrections field it was common practice to give the female officers first choice of the women’s prisons for their safety. A woman working in a men’s prison was a target for rape & brutalization. The male inmates in general didn’t like a woman telling them what to
do & would be more likely to harm a female officer because of it. Common incidents in men’s prisons include, stabbing, fights, rape, gassing (where they mix there pee & poop together & throw it in the face of an officer) riots , gang fights, planned gang assault on officers.
In women’s prisons violence is significantly lower. Majority of women in prison are not there for violent actions. Mostly drugs & prostitution. Yes we have women who are killers, & some that have done horrible things. But even then, these women are rarely predatory to others in
prison. Rape is not common, it’s more common for the women who are predatory to use their influence among the other women to pressure a new comer into a sexual relationship with them. Because of this it’s not uncommon for women to friend up with another woman in order to avoid
these predatory woman. It’s still shit behavior but it ain’t brutal rape like in the level that males do. Murder is rare in a women’s prison. If a fight brakes out women tend to want to slash the face of the other woman to make her ugly & scar her not kill her. Riots are rare
Gassing is rare, extreme violence over all is rare in women’s prison. A good officer who is far & shows companion can have a relatively easy time in a women’s prison. My father in-law also worked in the prison system for over 20 years. I also had friends who’s parents also
worked for the prison system. It was lucrative employment for people with only a high school education in the 90’s . So that’s what I know about prisons. And the idea of allowing men into women’s prisons is not only dangerous to the women inmates it’s dangerous to the women
employed by the state of California @Scott_Wiener & @GavinNewsom . Two men who don’t give a shit about the women who work or are incarcerated in the California prison system. Shame
