A thread about the duo of Veeramangai Velu Nachiyar Rani and her Commander Kuyili who were responsible for keeping the Britishers at bay and prevented them from taking control over Sivagangai .

After the British killed her husband and invaded Sivagangai with the help of the son of Nawab of Arcot she escaped with Marudhu brothers to Virupachi and tactfully decided to bid her time and collect a strong army to over throw the British

She stayed at the the Virupachi ,Dindugal under Gopala Nayaker of the Nayaka dynasty for 8 years and meanwhile made a momentary peace relation with Haider Ali so that he doesn’t interfere in her conquest. She managed to gather a force of 5000 infantry and cavalry force each.

In the year 1780 she brilliantly encircled the fort bribed the nationalists and Indian soldiers to switch sides and conducted a coup d’état but yet the the Britishers still had a huge ammunition depot which had to be destroyed as the Britishers were expecting reinforcement.

So Rani decided that a suicide mission was required to destroy the ammunition depot so that the Britishers would have no other option but to accept peace terms proposed by Rani.

But there was a dilemma in the camp as to who would carry this out. Then the commander-in -chief Kuyili decided that she would do this arduous job.

She drenched herself in ghee entered the ammunition depot and set herself to fire and the whole depot came down in a few minutes leaving the British gaping and confused as to what next.

They had no option but to accept the peace terms proposed by Rani Veramangai Velu Nachiyar that they would not invade Sivagangai and her daughter Vellachi would rule and the Marudhu brothers would help her in administration.

Post this war she ruled for 10 years and only after the death of her daughter Vellachi Sivagangai fell into the hands of the British.
