Science, data and golf.

(A long thread)

I don’t understand the pile on towards golfers.

Please read the thread before you get angry, like many do as soon as this is topic is raised.
In my experience golfers are hardly Covid-filled syringe-carrying vigilantes gleefully aiming to spread disease.

The two Sam’s @Origsmartassam, @sam_mcclure (and many others) get constant abuse because they have expressed their passion for their hobby.
Ok @Origsmartassam may have a little enthusiastically and passionately when he stood on the steps of parliament, but he was trending today because people are happy he can’t yet enjoy his hobby. ‘Sucked in Sam’. What a disgrace that is.
For me, and many others, it’s our once-a-week outlet & what we do aside from family & work. For mental health & fitness it’s our 1/2 day escape. From the minute we finish one round we are thinking about the next one. It’s that sort of game. Strange I know, but that’s how it is.
Some, like me, are members of clubs. We work hard & make sacrifices to pay for the privilege. I accept I’m fortunate to be in that position. We are not multi-millionaire country-clubbers. It’s our hobby and we pay for it. Many others are simply pay-to-pay players at local courses
The vast majority of golfers are a meek and compliant bunch.

In fact golfers understand and abide by rules.

It’s the foundation stone of the game itself. Self regulating and rule abiding.
So when golf returned briefly after the first lockdown, we played in pairs, spaced ourselves, shared the course, accepted we sometimes couldn’t get on, wore a mask, didn’t touch the flag or rake bunkers, etc, etc.
We looked on enviously when golf was first shutdown as hundreds roamed the aisles at Bunnings or strolled around Chadstone.

Apparently the science and data showed that was ok.
If golf caused Covid transmission in its brief return, we should know.

We need to know still.

Because then we’d understand that golf is dangerous.

As the Premier said, “no game of golf is worth a life.” If it’s dangerous he’s right. If the science and data says so.
However there has been no mention of the science and data on this.

Who knows if it exists.

I’d be happy to see it if it does.
I accept the restrictions. The curfew, 2 hours of exercise, the 5kms, work from home. I reluctantly accept the business shut downs. As hard as it is to accept why we got here. Like most Victorians we’ve diligently and obediently led a life of lockdown to get the numbers down.
However please show us the science and data that makes golf within our current parameters too dangerous.
Where is the science and data that led the Premier to say.. “no game of golf is worth a life”.

Given the the Premier’s own deep love, knowledge and passion for the game, that line seemed like nothing more than politics then, as it does now.
“The science and data guide us.”

It’s a daily refrain.

There were 200+ at my local footy oval today. 36 at a cricket net. 20 in line at the coffee shop next door. And three waiting to use the public toilet.

Science and data says this is ok - apparently. It’s Covid-normal.
As reported today, at public golf courses around Melbourne, hundreds are on course at any given time. 10 per hole. Science and data says this is ok. It’s Covid-normal.

No $5,000 fine for you.

But turn up with a 7 iron and all of a sudden golfers are dangerous disease spreaders
So if the science and data determines all of what we can do under our current resurrections, please show us the science and data that says playing golf, within 5km, for less than 2 hours, with one other person, is still a pursuit too dangerous.
That’s all golfers ask.
