One day in the future, historians will do a study on the nature and cause of the irrational hysterical response the vast majority of the world had to Covid.

And I think at its core, the reason is that humanity is bored.

Not everyone will get this but let me try to explain.
I saw so many people die because of the irrational hysterical response by our government and health care providers. I saw both family and clients, low and elite medical professionals die.

Not from covid but because of how hospitals were behaving.
Just counselled a mentally ill man who lost his job because of covid. Staying at home, he beat his wife nigh death and tried to commit suicide after. Before losing his job, he'd been doing okay.

I could go on and on about the completely illogical policies on social distancing...
...and economic lockdown.

It is insane.

It's not up to a hundred years ago, people were having parties and dinners in bunkers in London while German bombs were dropping overhead.

I saw first hand, people laughing and playing while hiding under the bed as almanjiri boys...
...with cudgels and daggers were prowling there front gate to kill and burn them alive.

My people I mean my family. This was during the sharia crises in Kaduna in 2000.

Humanity has taken some of the worst, horrible unspeakable evils imaginable with greater calm.
How then could people have reacted like this to a disease with over 99% survival rate? Even malaria kills more.

What happened?

I call it existential boredom.

Humanity has gotten soft. We have conquered most of our phsycial existential threats. And the ones we haven't...
...conquered, we have modified and delayed it's sting almost as long as it would take a normal life expectancy.

But that sense of purpose that comes from having challenges and triumphing over them is being starved. It is there but parched.
So like an auto immune response, humanity exalted the little challenge that covid could afford to make it a great foe. Thus the over reaction and thus all the collateral damage.

Just like an auto immune diseases.

In simpler terms. We are bored. So when we got the faintest...
...suggestion of a challenge, we gave it our all so that we can say we have done something with ourselves.

Guess what? Covid did not deserve our ALL.

Giving it our ALL made it worse. Time will tell how much we've lost because of how we responded.
It is true that the western mainstream media and WHO added fuel to the flames and infected the world with more hysterics.

But other nations with other issues weren't moved. Check South East Asian countries like Taiwan who are battling actual existential threats called Chinese...
...expansion. You think they don't have CNN?

The part that hurts me most is Africa. The compete absent mindedness, the inanity of our leaders is truly depressing.

Kai. No brain applied at all, Well except maybe a few like Seyi Makinde were different.
But the vast majority with their usual African low self esteem made policies purely based on what CNN was saying and with absolutely no recourse to how it would affect their own people.

Insanity.

Else, What sane reason would make the poverty capital of the world with only one-
-resource and the bulk of whose GDP is made up by the service sector to do a complete lockdown?

Answer is none.

African follow follow and low self esteem vexes my soul. Colonialism is long gone and actually makes a small fraction of the centuries long interaction we have had...
...with the West.

So what is our problem in 2020?

Dont let me get started with the response of believers to covid. Let me not start.

I don't drag my siblings shirts in public. It's ij that will hear my rant in the house.

Anyways, humanity is bored.
This tendency for hysterics in response to little issues is not just seen in covid. Look at US politics.

See them going crazy over some very paltry issues, things that by any standard, facts or experience, don't deserve the volume of emotions.
Anyways, I've sworn off US politics. There's nothing new to say. It's the same debates every single day.

Some people are reading this thread and still feel I'm not being fair in my assessment of covid. People died.

Of course people died from covid. And it was truly sad.
But the quality of the response was not befitting of a species blessed with the kind of cognition and armed with the kind of history we've had.

I'm done.
