Why is it confusing to learn Thai?
- compared to English that has 21 consonants and 5 vowels, Thai has 44 consonants and 32 vowels
- pronunciation varies in 5 tones mid, low, falling, rising and high
- there are vowels that dont have sound so it is implied as "a" or "o".

- they have tone markers, consonant classes, opening and ending syllables and length of vowels. Which is confusing really
- they dont have spaces in between words
- some words dont have a direct counterpart in English so translators need to think of a creative way to translate it

- classes of consonants: high, mid and low class. Most common one is low.
- classes help determine the "tone". Since Thai language is a tonal alphabet. Meaning changes depending on tone.
- in English, we use ABCDE etc. In Thai, they use A-Ant, B-Boy, C-Cat

- Consonants can be romanized the same came from diff. class. So if diff class, diff tone also.
- Consonants change when they are placed at the beggining or at the end of the phrase/word.
- there are rules on how to place the consonants to form sentences and form tone rules

- In Filo, you must have encountered Malumanay, Malumi, Maragsa at Mabilis. Same idea goes with Thai. They have: middle tone, mai ehk/low tone à, mai toh/falling tone â, mai trii/high tone á, and mai jattawa/rising tone ă.
- Determining the tone is the tricky part...

- Their words run deeply in their culture. So there will be no chance to know if we have 0 knowledge about their history/culture/day to day activities

* He is referring to the traditional clothing of farmer not My Humps by Blacked Eyed Peas.

- Ever encountered "Reply to Amourath". You want to scream WHO DA HALE IS AMOURATH?? Or the sentence is quite long but Google just gives you "confused" or " 555555" when you translate it?

Frustrating and confusing right? Well. Let's not trust google on that part.

- sometimes, they mispell words (ehem Gun Atthaphan wassup) or likes to place cute words like ja/jub jub at the end. (Ehem Off Jumpol). So if we are not that good in reading, we can familiarize ourselves with the commob words instead. But then again, it's quite confusing.

- They have different ways of addressing people.
ex Khub Khun Khrap (male speaker), Khub Khun Kha (female speaker), Chan/ I (female), Phom/I (male), He/She/They (Kao), Phi (senior), Nong (Junior), Ai (close friend/someone you hate), E (someone you hate but dont use on friends)

Pu/Ya= paternal grandpa/grandma
Ta/Yai = maternal grandpa/ grandma

- You'll see that apart from their culture, they have alot of Chinese influence. (yes aside from their culture, Buddhism and Chinese influence are must read also). Observe how Tay/91liners does their jokes. Normally they twists words/combine words with lyrics/Chinese/Thai culture

Ex.
Hie/兄 = Elder Brother/ Chinese looking male that is old enough to be your brother
Ko/哥 = same as Hie but used in Phuket/provinces
Je/Ji/ 姐 = Elder sister
Phuen/เพื่อน = Friend (same pronunciation in Ch)
Mot Laew/หมดแล้ว = no more

-สวัสดีตอนเย็น/sà-wàt-dii dtaawn-yen = Good evening

-อร่อย/à-ràwy = Delicious (Hi TayNew MealDate)

- Since I am talking too much, just to emphasize how confusing it is, try translating this in English. It gets so confusing.
