Her past, her father raised Annie to his benefit. He raised telling her that her only job in life was to fulfil her duty. Never was Annie raised as a child or a girl. That’s why she’s insecure about her “seduction skills” and seen not knowing how to respond to Bert.
During the 3D maneuvering gear check, Annie somewhat lets it slip that she genuinely cares for Armin. After Connie asks her if she’s joining the MP’s she automatically switches to Armin asking him what branch he’s going to join. She says “I see, so you’ve decided” looking upset
Annie was shown to genuinely care about Armin and he took notice to that calling her a “nice person” which I’m pretty sure caused her to feel something. Since she never saw herself that way.
Armin is very optimistic, he wants to explore the outside world, he’s smart, and cares about humanity and saving others. Annie is somewhat of the opposite. She knows humanity sucks, the outside world isn’t what it seems, she’s selfish and cares for herself and her father.
That’s a reason Annie would be drawn to Armin. Someone who has hope despite the world basically being shit.
In the female titan arc, she spared his life several times. Remember Annie deliberately isolated herself knowing she was going to betray them. But why was Armin any different then everyone she murdered?
Annie also knew Armin was smart and could figure her out but she continued to let him live.
When Armin asked Annie to help him, he seemed upset and the fact he had to guilt trip her into falling in his plan. She knew and walked into it. Also Armin had waited 1-2 months before speaking out about Annie being the female titan and having Marco’s odm head.
Also, in the confrontation scene Annie asks Armin: “when did you start looking at me like that, Armin?” Eren was looking at her the same way.
Armin also refused to believe it could’ve been Annie and rushed to wanting to talk things over. He didn’t want to believe it was her cause he genuinely felt something but might not had known it yet.
When Armin tried tricking Annie to kill him she was visibly upset and Armin knew she wouldn’t kill her but she’d still follow him.
Also when the cadets are choosing their branches Armin notices Bertholdt looking at Annie walk away. It seems as Armin was planning to check for her but caught Bertholdt simping.
Now, Armin inherited Bertholdt colossal titan. Titan shifter inherit MEMORIES not FEELINGS. Armin was able to grasp a better understanding for Annie thanks to Bertholdts memories. Also Armin had told Mikasa that Eren was lying to them to protect them.
Also when Armin destroyed the port he also was able to understand how they (the warriors) must’ve felt when they had to slaughter people to obey an order.
Armin had also visited Annie for 4 years, it is unknown if it was before or after he ate Bertholdt.
Annie still seemed to be bothered by Armin ratting her out and when she confronted him, Armin seemed to be upset at the fact he betrayed her.
Now, speaking in recent chapters (131 and 132) Its not out of place or sudden for an aruani confession. Part of Annie’s character is that she can be loved despite being considered a “monster”
Annie reciprocated Armin’s feelings, wanting her final moments in peace. Armin is that peace, she wants to remain by his side.
Armin is also the complete opposite of Eren. Meanwhile Eren pushes away the one he loves (Mikasa), Armin gets close to the one he loves (Annie.)
Their confession is actually very fitting and contracts the horrible reality of the rumbling. Isayama lives by the quote: “this world is so cruel, yet it is so beautiful.” The fact they are able to find love and comfort in each other during this time is part of that beauty.
I really hope aruani makes it out alive, they’re my favorite ship and I feel like the way Isayama built this up is amazing. They have an enemies to lover’s relationship.
