okay so, you're entitled to not like the beatles, but saying they didn't do anything for music is just wrong. i was obsessed w them for months so heres a thread of facts that come from the top of my head ✨ https://twitter.com/collnsmith/status/1309638415693078534
disclaimer: some of these stuff might be wrong cause im not double checking. please let me know. + this is taking them in their context !!
1- the beatles were a big part of the revolution of the youth during the 60s. when british music and industry was plagued with american music (eg. elvis), they came and marked a new style (a combination of multiple styles ofc nobody invented a thing)
please note that they ALWAYS referred to their influences and never stole a thing -- some people say they stole music from black people n this might be debatable but not likely !!!
2- the beatles imposed the long hair on the uk. it was view as unpolished and inappropriate. if you think its common and popular -- its partly because of them
3- they practically invented fandom !!! the beatlemania was one of the biggest fandom forms, and still remains to this day. before them there wasn't security on shows but the fans would jump over them because of euphoria 😭😭😭
plus, they sometimes couldnt even play because of the screams. it was insane and i dont think there wasnt anything like it before. there might be but its sometimes referred as the first big fandom
4- they changed the way interviews was made. usually artists would act centered and chill, answering typical questions, but the beatles were funny, fresh and acted like actual young men. this is common today but back then it was actually revolutionary
artists were expected to act as boring adults cause they were the main public but the beatles were more youth oriented !! young people was having voice on mainstream stuff and they were a part of it
5- they pioneered the concept of album. back then, music was just a compliation of singles and music with no connection, but rubber soul was super revolutionary. it had a concept. it blew everyone's minds
this was at a bigger scale with sgt. peppers, most people think its their best album. for me rubber soul is better but uhm yeah😳👉👈
6- they were of the firsts of using the studio as an instrument. they invented multiple technics that are still used today. for example, before them music was a one take thing, and they used loops n stretched tapes to make them sound weird !! ✨ distortion ✨
they would even get to put a sweater on the drums to make them sound different. maybe dumb but to me is amazing 😭
7- i think this one is super important but, they dismantled the myth that u had to be super educated to make good music !! they didnt know a thing about music theory or reading music sheets!!
even if this is often debated, cause they did amazing things and people are skeptical, they didn't have formal music studies n their producer had to write their music cause they literally couldn't
8- their music was pop but the sound was new to everyone. you might think "their music is so boring !!" well cause u heard a million songs inspired by theirs !! the influence was massive, even today bands start because of them
i know they weren't the best people n u might find their music bad, but i promise its super interesting to listen to them while reading the context !! they even helped to give voice to people during vietnam war, n to represent atheism, which was extremely frown upon
they were "cancelled" multiple times at their time (this trend is not new guys), cause they were rebel, controversial and authentic. adults couldnt stand them n if they were new today theyd be look as a "cringey teenage girl thing" by those same adults that praise them
anyway ill probably gonna remember something else later n this prolly gonna flop gnight everyone
