THREAD: I was heavily involved in this effort in Minneapolis, and there is a lot of important reporting in this piece by @AsteadWesley. But there are a few important points that I think are missing and that I wanted to share that paint a different picture about this effort https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1309875400215011334">https://twitter.com/nytimes/s...
First, I wish this piece said more about the actual ballot being proposed & not just the rhetoric on defund or not. There was an actual ballot being proposed with a real framework and vision for what a new Department of Community Safety would look like. This is key, yet got lost
Second, while the article referenced polling, it didn& #39;t include the only poll that was conducted of the actual ballot question. And that poll showed 61% of voters would have voted YES. The public supported the ballot once they heard what was being proposed https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/new-polling-shows-broad-majority-minneapolis-residents-favor-2020-charter-change">https://www.aclu.org/press-rel...
Finally, this fight is not over. There is real movement for a citizens petition to get this ballot or a similar proposal on the ballot in 2021. Because of procedural rules, the ballot had to move in lightening speed to get on for this November. But there& #39;s plenty of time for 2021
PS. This was my thread from the day that the Charter Commission voted to essentially delay the ballot to 2021: https://twitter.com/UdiACLU/status/1291193500759994371?s=20">https://twitter.com/UdiACLU/s...
