Last week, Derek Carr targeted Darren Waller 16 times against the Saints. Waller caught 12 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.
I went through all 16 of his targets to see how they used him, and dream on how the Packers could use their TEs this week. You ready? I'm ready.
Working a deep out route under the vertical push from Ruggs. I love the follow up the seam before the break out of a stack look. Can't create much separation on the cut.
Works a route in the middle against a dropping LB. Pushes in, then a nice turn to the outside to create separation. Nice timing on the route/throw.
Working the flat on Mesh. Waller works under the vertical route from Witten and the crossing route from Jones. Waller fakes the block from his backfield position and releases to the flat.
Working the curl from the left side. The defender over top drops into the flat zone, leaving a DE to drop back into coverage. Waller reads it and turns.
Nice throw from Carr on that, by the way.
Nice work on the angle route. Always love a good angle route, and this one comes from the in-line position. Sets him up to the outside, then comes back inside.
Working an out against a LB. LB reads it perfectly and undercuts it.
Working an out from in-line under an out route out of spread. Nice move at the top of the route to create separation.
Outside receiver runs in, Waller to the flat.
Working an inside route against a LB. Wins the battle and Carr hits him in the middle.
Nice move from Waller on the goal line. Sets up like he's blocking, swings his partner round-and-round and releases to the flat.
Sits back for the block, but his man releases back into zone, so Waller sits around and works as the checkdown option.
Waller motions to an uncovered in-line position. Double-slants/flat with Waller on the flat. Safety splits the slants to pick up Waller, but Waller is a strong man and is able to get out of the tackle.
Vertical switch release out of the slot. No real rub to speak of and the DB has inside position so Carr goes back-shoulder.
Deep crosser underneath dueling crosser. Just gets inside position and outruns across the field.
PA bootleg with Waller as the crosser to the flat under the line.
And, finally, working the crosser route behind the out from Witten. Nice defensive move to undercut the route.
So what did we see?
Honestly, not a ton of crazy stuff. One vertical route that came on a switch up the sideline. The couple other deeper routes basically came on crossers. A couple short routes in the middle and the rest in the flats.
So far this year, the Packers have used their TEs on vertical routes up the seam, which we didn't really see here but we will be seeing on Sunday Night. I'm curious to see how that will go.
Some of the shorter stuff was just getting Waller on a LB and having him use his size to get good position. There's not really anything here that is outside the realm of what the Packers are doing.
I don't know that any one TE is going to tear up the Saints this weekend, but they've got the bodies to take advantage of the Saints defense. Really looking forward to seeing what they roll out.
